House of Commons Gathering Shines Light on North East’s Offshore Wind Innovations

by | May 21, 2024 | Kinewell Energy

Earlier this month, Kinewell’s Dr. Andrew Jenkins had the honour of being invited to a prestigious event at the House of Commons. The event, hosted by Ian Levy MP and Energi Coast, North East England’s Offshore Wind Cluster, aimed to showcase the strategic importance and pioneering role of the North East region in the offshore wind sector.

This pivotal gathering brought together industry leaders, stakeholders, and policymakers who are driving the region’s ambitions in advancing deepwater offshore wind projects. One of the highlights of the event was a speech by ORE Catapult Director of Technology Development and EnergiCoast Chair Tony Quinn, which resonated deeply with Kinewell’s mission. Quinn spoke about the region’s highly skilled supply chain and “insatiable appetite for innovation.”

Andrew returned from the event feeling even more empowered and motivated to drive Kinewell forward. Reflecting on the experience and the impactful speeches delivered that day, he commented, “Standing shoulder to shoulder with every business leader of the north east offshore wind sector and its supply chain, the region gave a clear message to the nations’ political leadership; make the next UK offshore wind leasing round in the North East and go big – not a piecemeal one or two Giga Watts, but on a scale of 10’s of Giga Watts. We have the supply chain here within the region to deliver it, and we have the developers with the ambition to invest here; we just need the projects. It’s not a question of one area or another, we need them all – Scottish offshore wind, and Celtic sea offshore wind, and North East offshore wind.”
