In an exciting initiative to bridge the gap between education and industry, Kinewell recently participated in the BBC Bitesize Careers Tour, bringing real-world insights to Year 9 and 10 students. The tour, led by host Lucas Yeomans, featured Kinewell’s Dylan Jones, along other industry experts, to share candid perspectives about careers in STEM.
Over three engaging sessions, the panel broke down barriers and challenged traditional career narratives. Students got an unprecedented look into professional life, exploring everything from daily job roles to personal career journeys. The format was refreshingly honest – moving beyond typical career advice to provide genuine, relatable insights.
Key themes emerged throughout the discussions. The panelists emphasised that success isn’t about having a perfect plan from day one, but about embracing opportunities, developing soft skills, and remaining adaptable. They shared personal stories of uncertainty, showing students that it’s okay not to have everything figured out in school.
The tour highlighted the diverse pathways into STEM careers, challenging the traditional university route. From T-levels and apprenticeships to self-teaching and alternative education paths, the message was clear: technology and innovation are accessible to everyone, regardless of background.
“Local outreach is crucial,” said Dylan, Data Scientist and Optimisation Specialist at Kinewell. “We want to show young people that exciting career opportunities exist right here in our community. You don’t need to move to a big city to find innovative work – the future of technology is happening right here.”
