Bringing real offshore wind engineering into the classroom

EduKLOC is a free STEM tool that turns Pythagoras into a power grid — run it yourselves, or let Kinewell deliver it for you

Kinewell’s optimisation software designs the cable layouts inside real offshore wind farms. EduKLOC puts that same engineering challenge in front of students — turning geometry, trigonometry and cost analysis into a hands-on wind farm design competition, and giving young people an early, tangible link between the maths they learn in class and the careers helping to build the UK’s clean energy future.

What is EduKLOC?

EduKLOC is a free educational game built on KLOC, Kinewell’s professional inter-array cable layout optimisation tool used across the offshore wind industry. Just like professional engineers, students use the software to design efficient wind farm layouts, calculating the distances between turbines using the Pythagorean theorem, and working out where to route cables by finding the shortest paths.

Bring maths to life

This hands-on experience takes a core element of the maths curriculum, like geometry, and makes it tangible. Students get to:

Apply the Pythagorean theorem to real-world scenarios

Calculate cable lengths as the hypotenuse of triangles

Determine project costs based on cable prices per metre

Optimise their wind farm design for the lowest total cost

Instead of abstractly working through formulas, students become engineers tackling an industrial problem, with teachers able to spark competition through a live class leaderboard to see who designs the most cost-effective wind farm layout.

How it works

Students log in and design their own offshore wind farm cable layout, competing to build the most efficient, cost-effective design. Teachers have their own login to set up sessions, monitor progress, and run a live class leaderboard, turning a maths lesson into a design competition.

Self-led

Register for free, log in, and run EduKLOC in the classroom whenever suits your timetable. Teacher accounts come with supporting materials and the class leaderboard, so no additional preparation or industry knowledge is needed to run a full session.

Delivered by Kinewell

Our team can come to you to run the session directly, introducing students to the offshore wind industry and real engineering careers alongside the game itself. This option works well for STEM days, careers events, school visits and outreach programmes, and can be tailored to the age group and time you have available.

Why it matters

The UK’s transition to net zero depends on a new generation of engineers, scientists and data specialists. EduKLOC gives students a hands-on, memorable connection between classroom maths and real engineering careers, helping to address the skills gap the clean energy sector faces as it continues to grow.

“Harnessing the power of clean energy is vital for our planet’s future. By giving students hands-on experience with renewable technologies like wind farms, we can inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists to innovate solutions that protect our environment and secure a sustainable energy outlook.”
