From Academic Prototype to Deployable Software
Project Information
Project Name: ResTOrES (Resilience Toolkit for Offshore Energy Systems)
Project Type: Advisory role on prototype development
Background
Kinewell was an industry partner on ResTOrES (Resilience Toolkit for Offshore Energy Systems), an EPSRC-funded project developing a prototype resilience assessment framework spanning offshore wind, hydrogen, and interconnector infrastructure. These are three historically separate systems, which the project treated as one interconnected whole.
The Challenge
Academic research tools are typically built to prove a concept works, not to meet the operational demands of real-world deployment. ResTOrES needed an industry partner who could look at the prototype through a practical lens and identify what stood between it and something usable by industry.
Solution
Kinewell’s role was to assess how the academic prototype would function against real-world, operational requirements, identifying the specific gaps between the research tool and deployable software and advising on the practical route from prototype to product.
Conclusion
The work demonstrated Kinewell’s ability to bridge academic research and commercial deployment, understanding how separate systems and datasets interconnect and identifying the specific gaps that need closing to make that interconnection work in practice.
