Renewable Energy Research: Software Modeller (C language)

Salary anticipated to be in the range of £25,000 – £48,000 per year dependent on skills and experience.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced engineer or physicist with C programming skills to join our rapidly growing team, working on the back-end code for our modelling and optimisation software solutions.  

You will develop software features and address issues in response to internal and client requirements. As a well-rounded, flexible and an excellent team player you will develop robust algorithms that are computationally efficient. You will have a keen interest in global challenges including net-zero and be able to engage with clients and internally. 

You will be self-motivated, creative, and have innovative flair. 

Depending on experience, your own motivations and company need, you could also be involved in other areas of the business. 

Key Accountabilities

  • Undertake R&D activities and engage with funded projects 
  • Creation of new product features, including the definition and documentation 
  • Innovative algorithm development 
  • Maintain and develop existing software features 
  • Familiarisation with product code bases 
  • Review code written by others 
  • Identify and scope new features and solutions that could form future R&D activities 
  • Maintain international company presence by participating in conferences and webinars, seeking new opportunities in areas relevant to the company 
  • Keep up to date with industry challenges 

Depending on experience: 

  • Where appropriate, project manage relevant projects on time and on budget 
  • Identify new funding and revenue opportunities 
  • Coach and mentor more junior staff 
  • Utilise our unique products and services, coupled with your own expertise, to deliver consultancy projects to clients 

The Person

Knowledge, skills and experience 


  • Competent in C programming 
  • A strong understanding of model-based engineering, the required accuracy for the task in hand, and the sources of error between the real world and the model 
  • Proven experience of managing a workload with competing demands 
  • Proven experience in understanding and defining new software requirements, identifying and implementing the most appropriate algorithm or technique to meet the requirements 
  • A strong mathematical or engineering background 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to 
  • write specifically and concisely 
  • communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders 
  • Use of source control (e.g. git, SourceTree) 

Highly Desirable 

  • Proven experience in the application of optimisation techniques and algorithms 
  • Working experience within the energy sector and in particular, offshore wind 
  • Proven experience delivering highly uncertain collaborative R&D projects, as well as undertaking independent research 
  • A proven ability to write successful proposals and win new fee-earning work related to your expertise 
  • Competent in Python programming 
  • Proven experience in the application of data science/data analysis 


  • Experience managing, coaching or mentoring more junior staff 
  • Working experience of other programming languages 
  • A good professional network with excellent rapport with relevant potential new clients 
  • Ability to effectively communicate in languages other than English that are relevant to the offshore wind market
