Salary anticipated to be in the range of £50,000 – £75,000 per year dependent on skills and experience.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced engineer and strategic thinker to join us as Chief Technology Officer (CTO), who will sit on, and report to, the company’s board.

The CTO will oversee the Product Development and Client Success teams, taking responsibility for the technical delivery of the company. The CTO will lead on and maintain the company’s technology development roadmap and deliver it; prioritising appropriately, keeping to budgets, leveraging external funding where appropriate, identifying and resolving skills gaps.  The successful candidate will have innovative flair, define the ‘art of the possible’, keep a close eye on industry trends and future needs, and take a leadership role in defining what the future offshore wind industry doesn’t yet know it needs.

Over time with growth, it is anticipated that the role will be additionally supported by dedicated project managers and innovation funding grant writers.

Key Accountabilities

  • Take responsibility for the technical delivery of the company
  • Line management, leading and supervising technical managers
  • Defining, refining, and implementing, the company’s technology development roadmap
  • Keeping up to date with industry developments, and take a leadership role within it
  • Soliciting appropriate advice, such as feedback from business development and customer success teams of client needs and challenges, and to ensure company technology development investments will be commercially successful
  • Developing complex collaborative partnerships to leverage existing external IP and solve skills gaps
  • Keeping up to date with local, national, and international political priorities, and how they flow down to opportunities for new product development and associated R&D and innovation funding.

The Person

Knowledge, skills and experience

Essential

  • A strong technical background with proven research skills and expertise that is relevant to the company and its existing products and services
  • Proven ability to manage others’ in technical delivery including outside of your own direct technical expertise.
  • Proven ability to assimilate industry trends, state of the art, and strategically determine future industry needs and trends
  • Commercially aware with a proven ability to strategically, despite often competing priorities, prioritise the most important work within set budgets
  • A sound understanding of the R&D and innovation funding landscape, and proven ability to bid for, and successfully secure, substantial (£300k+) funding including for complex multi-stakeholder projects
  • Budgeting experience, including an understanding of the issues relating to matched funding, leverage etc, in the context of external funding bids.
  • A proven ability to successfully delegate, communicate effectively and concisely to technical and non-technical audiences, manage relationships with internal and external partners, and manage conflicts of interest that arise.
  • Highly skilled in strategic thinking and associated decision making
  • Proven leadership skills to motivate colleagues and bring people along with the plan

Highly Desirable

  • Experience negotiating IP licensing agreements, and finding a ‘fair slicing of the pie’ when determining who takes the various benefits and risks in complex value-chains.
  • Experience in the Energy industry, particularly renewable energy and offshore wind
  • Project management experience, particularly related to publicly funded projects

Desirable

  • Knowledge of human factors and heuristics, and a proven ability to create systems of work to mitigate their potential to cause error
  • Formal project management qualification, such as PRINCE
  • Ability to effectively communicate in languages other than English that are relevant to the offshore wind market

Qualifications

Essential

  • The right to work in the UK
  • A STEM based degree (2:1 or above) in a relevant subject from a highly reputable institution

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification
